View of Antelope Canyon, near Page, Arizona on August 24, 2009. The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tse' bighanilini, which means "the place where water runs through rocks." Upper Antelope is at about 4,000 feet elevation and the canyon walls rise 120 feet above the streambed. Lower Antelope Canyon is Hasdestwazi, or "spiral rock arches." Both are located within the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation. Though dry most of the year, Antelope Canyon runs, and sometimes floods, with water after rains. It is the water, slowly wearing away the sandstone that has formed the beautiful and graceful curves in the rock. Wind has also played a role in sculpting the canyon.

China temui di sebuah kawasan tanah perkuburan yang luas..Yangshe (Yellow River)

DI sebuah kampung di kawasan pedalaman, Yangshe yang terletak di tebing Sungai Kuning (Yellow River), sekumpulan ahli arkeologi China yang melakukan kerja-kerja penggalian di situ menemui satu budaya purba yang berusia hampir 3,000 tahun. Ia bakal ditatap oleh penduduk China dan dunia apabila sebuah muzium yang dibina khusus untuk menempatkan kesemua penemuan itu siap dibina pada tahun 2010.

Peninggalan nenek moyang penduduk China itu ditemui di sebuah kawasan tanah perkuburan yang luas. Kumpulan ahli arkeologi itu sebenarnya telah menggali khazanah milik maharaja terdahulu yang terletak di Yangshe dalam wilayah Shanxi, utara China.

Ia merupakan satu penemuan yang mana kebanyakan negara di dunia akan memuji kerja-kerja penggalian yang telah dilakukan.

"Kami sedang menjalani zaman kegemilangan dalam bidang arkeologi di China," kata Ji Kunzhang, seorang ahli arkeologi dari Institut Penyelidikan Arkeologi Shanxi yang memikul tanggungjawab mengawasi kerja-kerja penggalian di Yangshe.

Individu seperti Kunzhang berusaha menggali penemuan perdana di negara itu dan apa yang dilakukannya itu telah memberi petunjuk baru kepada isu-isu pertikaian mengenai tamadun tertua dunia.

Dalam satu contoh yang berlaku di wilayah Anhui Timur, ahli arkeologi telah menemui satu kawasan makam purba yang dihiasi dengan batu jed yang pertama di China. Jed yang ditemui itu berukir rupa bentuk seekor babi dan mempunyai tarikh-tarikh pada zaman neolitik. Batu jed tersebut ditemui bersama ratusan batu jed lain di kawasan tersebut.

Dalam satu lagi penggalian hebat pada tahun 2007, sekumpulan ahli arkeologi telah menemui lebih daripada 10,000 buah tembikar China dan peninggalan-peninggalan lain. Kesemua bahan-bahan tersebut ditemui di sebuah kapal purba yang karam di Laut China Selatan lebih daripada 700 tahun dahulu.

Penggalian arkeologi di laut dalam itu dijalankan di sebuah pulau yang dikenali sebagai Xisha di Laut China Selatan. Lokasi itu dipercayai menjadi laluan utama perdagangan pada zaman tersebut.

Dalam kerja-kerja penggalian yang dilakukan di Yangshe pula, penemuan luar biasa yang menakjubkan adalah sebuah lubang besar yang mengandungi 48 buah kereta kuda dan 105 ekor kuda yang telah dikebumikan bersama seorang maharaja terkenal dari Dinasti Zhou Barat (1120 - 781 Sebelum Masehi). Kuda dan kereta kuda itu dipercayai digunakan untuk tujuan ketenteraan.

Beberapa hasil penemuan lain dipercayai berasal dari zaman Dinasti Shang dan Dinasti Zhou (1600 - 256 Sebelum Masehi). "Penemuan itu juga membawa petunjuk mengenai kubur tanah liat maharaja pertama China, Qin Shihuang yang berkuasa kira-kira 600 tahun lalu," jelas Kunzhang.

Antara penemuan itu termasuklah kereta berkuda istiadat yang mana ia dicat elok dengan laker merah manakala pintu-pintu berukir dengan gangsa. Gerabak perang yang dilindungi dengan plat-plat gangsa turut ditemui.

"Kita percaya kereta-kereta kuda dan kuda tersebut digunakan oleh pasukan tentera dalam kempen tentera," katanya.


Beliau menambah: "Setakat ini, kita pernah mengira sekurang-kurangnya 105 ekor kuda yang dipercayai telah diberi dadah dan ditanam hidup-hidup yang mana kepala kuda terpacak dan ada pula yang diikat kaki."

Negeri itu adalah sebahagian daripada wilayah pada era Dinasti Zhou yang dibahagikan kepada barat dan timur.

Tanah perkuburan tersebut telah ditemui kali pertama pada tahun 1992 tetapi pembiayaan untuk penggalian yang lebih besar bermula pada tahun 1996.

Sejak itu, kesemua 19 buah makam telah ditemui dengan penemuan kuda dalam kuantiti yang besar manakala lubang yang menempatkan kereta kuda ditemui selepas empat tahun kerja-kerja penggalian dilakukan.

"Muzium yang akan menempatkan kesemua penemuan itu kini sedang dibina dan dijangka siap serta dibuka untuk orang ramai pada tahun 2010," katanya.

Muzium yang menelan belanja kira-kira AS$ 13 juta (RM45.8 juta) akan menempatkan semua harta karun gangsa dan artifak jed dari 19 buah makam para pemimpin dan isteri mereka dari dinasti berkenaan.

"Kami memperoleh tambahan pembiayaan daripada kerajaan negeri dan lebih banyak penggalian besar-besaran akan dilakukan di seluruh negara," kata Kunzhang. - AFP
